The coconut is the fruit of the coconut palm (Cocos nucifera), a tall, long-living tree that thrives in tropical and subtropical coastal regions due to its high tolerance for salt, sandy soil, and strong winds. Botanically, the coconut is a drupe, not a true nut, and it has three layers: a smooth outer skin, a thick fibrous husk (coir), and a hard inner shell that protects the seed. Inside the shell are the white kernel (meat) and coconut water, which nourish the seed during germination. Coconuts are highly valued for their nutritional, economic, and cultural importance—providing food products such as coconut oil, milk, flour, and sugar, while also supplying materials for ropes, mats, charcoal, cosmetics, and traditional medicines. Rich in healthy fats, minerals, and antioxidants, coconuts play a major role in the diets and livelihoods of millions of people, especially in island and coastal communities, earning the coconut palm the title “tree of life.”
